En el verano de 1979 la banda The
Boomtown Rats era número uno en las listas de éxito del Reino Unido con la canción "I Don't Like Mondays".
A primera hora de la mañana del 29 de enero de 1979, Brenda
comenzó a disparar desde la ventana de su salón a la escuela primaria Cleveland Elementary School que estaba en frente de su casa.
El rifle que utilizó fue un regalo de su padre por Navidad aunque
ella le había pedido una radio. Un rifle semiautomático calibre 22 con mira
telescópica y 500 balas fue el regalo elegido, aunque ya había sido arrestada
por disparar contra las ventanas de la escuela con una pistola de aire
comprimido.
Mató a dos adultos, hirió a ocho niños y un agente de policía. Fue arrestada tras 6 horas de tiroteo cuando se le terminaron las balas. Tras su detención le preguntaron por el motivo y su respuesta fue "No me gustan los lunes. Sólo lo hice para animarme el día".
